Artist's Statement: On Reflection
I am intrigued by the cycles and organic processes inherent in nature, particularly the way they seem to reflect our own inner landscape and human condition.
Whenever I long for a sense of peace in my life, the notion of water quickly comes to mind. It could be the ocean, a lake or a small pond. Perhaps it’s the wide expanse of emptiness that summons that feeling to let go; perhaps it’s the element of mystery, hidden beneath the water’s surface; or perhaps it's simply the serenity of the natural setting that invokes self-reflection.
As I began this series of paintings based on water, I was drawn to the patterns and rhythms formed by the reflections...their process of shifting, diffusing and distoring reality. Beginning with a photograph and a slow build up of paint layers, I attempt to capture the subtle transitions in colour, texture and pattern that alter a given surface. As my work progresses, the painting shifts from realism to abstraction. I enjoy this shift as it seems to echo the way reflections alter the landscape.
